3-HR Binge for Ruiz Against Spartanburg
In a powerful performance that left the fans at Legion Stadium buzzing, Greenwood Braves center fielder Chico Ruiz blasted a trio of home runs en route to a win, 4-3, over the Spartanburg Phillies.
"Everything was clicking," Ruiz told the press. "My timing was good and I got pitches I could handle and I didn't miss them."
Ruiz shined brilliantly in the win, with 4 hits in 4 at-bats, 3 RBIs and 3 runs scored.
"It's not just one guy, it's everybody," Braves manager Antonio Gonzalez said. "Chico played great but it takes more than one guy to win a game."
Chico Ruiz hit a solo-shot off Erskine Thomason in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Erskine Thomason in the 5th and hit a solo-shot off James Goodwin in the 7th.
At present, Ruiz is batting .417 with 10 hits and 4 home runs. He has knocked in 4 runs and scored 6 times.
Thomason Twirls Phillies to Shutout Win
Goose eggs were the order of the day for the Gastonia Pirates as starter Erskine Thomason shut them out, 4-0, at Sims Legion Park. The Spartanburg pitcher struck out 7 and walked 2 while allowing 9 hits.
"Thomason was good but he wasn't flawless," Gastonia manager <John Ketelhut:coach#422> said. "We had a few opportunities to make something happen and we didn't do it. Not to take anything away from Spartanburg, but this is on us."
So far this year, Thomason has compiled a 4-2 record with a 2.92 ERA.
